The Best Credit Cards for Free Checked Bags
A few years ago, Air Canada and WestJet made a few changes to their fares and fees to compete with low-cost carriers:
- Air Canada and WestJet hiked checked bag fees on economy flights from $25 to $30 one-way for the first bag, and from $35 to $50 one-way for the second bag.
- Air Canada introduced Economy Basic, which doesn't come with checked bags even for international flights.
But wait - did you know that there actually a few Canadian credit cards that include free checked bags as part of their perks? Yes, that's right! These are the cards that include free checked bags as a perk:

Sweet Spot: Round-trip flight to Hawaii or Europe. These destinations are further away and tend to be longer trips, which means more to pack. If you can bring along a few more things (or leave room for shopping), all the better.

Other Perks: The $250 can also be used toward seat selection and airport parking. You also get access to the National Bank Lounge at Montreal Trudeau Airport.
Annual Fee: $150 (first year waived if applying before May 31, 2022)

Sweet Spot: Any Air Canada flight that doesn't include a free checked bag (e.g. any domestic/U.S. flights, or Economy Basic flights between Canada and Europe).
There are a few other Canadian cards that offer free checked bags, but I wouldn't recommend them as they have hefty annual fees and/or high income requirements.

- Achieve WestJet Silver status with the WestJet Rewards Program
